An Extent in ringing is the total number of possible rows that can be achieved on a particular stage. The total is found by simply applying <math>n!</math>, where 'n' is the total number of non-stationary bells.

  • for 5 bells the extent is: <math>5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120 rows</math>
  • for 7 bells the extent is: <math>7! = 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5,040 rows</math>

for little methods the extent is: <math>h(n-1)!</math> where 'h' is the number of places the hunt bell reaches:

  • for Little Bob Major, the extent is: <math>4 x 7! = 4 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 20,160 rows</math>
