A Peal is a ringing performance which contains a set number of changes (rows). The Peal is started and ends in rounds with the number of rows in a Peal being defined as:
- 5040 changes made up of true extents on 6 bells or less
- 5040 changes made up of one true extent on 7 bells (ie. no rows repeated between start and end)
- over 5000 changes on 8 or more bells, with no repeat of rows between start and end
A Peal is rung complying to a strict guideline set by the Central Council. It lasts around 3 hours, with light bells and handbells taking a lot less time (maybe as little as 2 hours and 30 minutes on light bells) to as long as 4 hours on the heavier rings.
