An Extent in ringing is the total number of possible rows that can be achieved on a particular stage. The total is found by simply applying n!, where 'n' is the total number of non-stationary bells.

  • for 5 bells the extent is: 5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120 rows
  • for 7 bells the extent is: 7! = 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5,040 rows

for little methods the extent is: h(n-1)! where 'h' is the number of places the hunt bell reaches:

  • for Little Bob Major, the extent is: 4 x 7! = 4 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 20,160 rows
  • for Littleport Little Surprise Royal, the extent is: 8 x 9! = 8 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 2,903,040 rows
